چکیده

Abstract Soft cyclic hydraulic fracturing has become an effective technology used in subsurface energy extraction which utilises flow pressure to fracture rock. This new technique induces fatigue of rock reduce the breakdown and potentially associated risk seismicity. To control process achieve desirable networks for enhanced permeability, response under stimulation needs be understood. However, mechanism stimulation-induced is rather unclear date there no implementation degradation modelling loading. makes accurate prediction impossible. paper develops a numerical method model induced by pulses with consideration fatigue. The based on S–N curves ( S stress N cycles failure) implemented into constitutive relationship using in-house FORTRAN scripts ABAQUS solver. cohesive crack simulate discrete propagation coupled pore capability. developed validated via experimental results pulsating effects rate frequency injection borehole development are investigated. A loading strategy proposed. It been found that can 10–18% upon 10–4000 cycles. Using strategy, slow steady obtained while failure reduced.

Hydraulic fracture modelling with double node zero-thickness interface elements

In recent years, numerical modelling of hydraulic fracture has become a hot topic in Petroleum Engineering. The main difficulty is related to the numerical treatment of discontinuities in a geological medium. Several approaches can be found in the literature (Boone and Ingraffea, 1990; Adachi et al., 2007); however, some of them resort to simplifications that make them inapplicable in complex c...

Two new methods for the determination of hydraulic fracture apertures in fractured-rock aquifers†

Fracture apertures play a significant role in groundwater systems. For proper groundwater quantity and contamination management, fractures have to be properly characterised. However, due to their complexity, fracture characterisation is one of the main challenges for hydrogeologists all over the world. This is particularly important in South Africa, where aquifers are predominantly fractured. T...

Simulation of hydraulic fracturing of jointed rock

This paper presents a modeling approach for three-dimensional simulation of hydraulic fracturing of jointed rock. The base for a successful computer based simulation for productive use is the ability to calculate the fractured volume with sufficient accuracy and efficiency. Especially in cases three dimensional effects have to be taken into account, the common commercial software tools in oil a...

Discrete element modeling of explosion-induced fracture extension in jointed rock masses

The explosion process of explosives in a borehole applies a very high pressure on its surrounding rock media. This process can initiate and propagate rock fractures, and finally, may result in the rock fragmentation. Rock fragmentation is mainly caused by the propagation of inherent pre-existing fractures of the rock mass and also from the extension of the newly formed cracks within the intact ...

Hydraulic fracture during epithelial stretching

The origin of fracture in epithelial cell sheets subject to stretch is commonly attributed to excess tension in the cells' cytoskeleton, in the plasma membrane, or in cell-cell contacts. Here, we demonstrate that for a variety of synthetic and physiological hydrogel substrates the formation of epithelial cracks is caused by tissue stretching independently of epithelial tension. We show that the...
